Block Shop
Block Shop is a Los Angeles–based textile, art, and design studio that makes homewares in partnership with
independent manufacturers at the forefront of ethical production. Its hardware line for Petra was designed by Hopie Stockman Hill, who serves as the brand’s CEO and creative director. She studied painting and also works as a studio artist. Her background before starting Block Shop was in investment research and marketing; she went to business school at Harvard, where she focused on social entrepreneurship. She’s been painting the whole way through.
Block Shop's knobs are in contrast with the geometric, Bauhaus- and Art Deco-inspired compositions that the brand is best known for, reflecting the varied influences of Stockman Hill’s personal painting practice. “As a painter, I gravitate towards maximalist compositions of flora and fauna, and figurative imagery rich with narrative,” she says. “These fixtures are my way of weaving together the two opposing aesthetic languages of my textile work and painting practice.”
